Five Go to Blencathra
Saturday, June 6th, 2009And then there were five. After an early start we met two others in Threlkeld, a quaint village on the edge of Keswick and at the foot of Blencathra.
Climbing Blencathra
We had a sumptious brekkie at the Horse and Farrier pub before setting off up Blencathra.
After the cloud had cleared the previous afternoon it was a glorious morning, and there were views for miles around: including Skiddaw mountain, Keswick and lake/reservoirs Thirlmere and Derwent Water.
Scrambling Sharp-Edge
After walking for the first half of the climb we then mostly scrambled up the ’sharp-edge’ to the top, which was good fun.
Parasailors flying just overhead greeted us at the top, along with 360 degree views for miles and miles and miles.
Castlerigg, Keswick and Derwent Water
After sliding back down the mountain we spent the afternoon on the banks of Derwent Water, ate in Keswick and visited the Castlerigg stone circle in the evening.
An idyllic day, and the next we returned to sweet home Leeds where the skies were so blue, before watching Lynyrd Skynyrd at the Manchester Apollo.
