Was Lawrence of Arabia the First Writer of the Greenygrey?

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

Hi, it’s Marc Latham here.  I thought I was the first writer of the Greenygrey when writing up GG’s epic North American virtual travel tales but today I read in the Metro newspaper of a letter sent by TE Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) in which he described Lincolnshire as ‘a picture of dead earth in green and grey’.  It was also reported in the Independent newspaper

Seven Pillars of Greenygrey Wisdom?

Lawrence’s most famous work was the Seven Pillars of Wisdom.  I wonder if the Greenygrey was one of them?  The letter went for £33,000 at auction, and I hope GG’s worth that much soon!

I would ask it if it remembers Lawrence but it’s engrossed in a documentary about Graham Norton trying to save endangered Ethiopian wolves at the moment.

Your Chance to Vote Greenygrey and Make the Planet’s Day

Friday, May 14th, 2010

WWF and Tetrapak have joined up for an exciting new initiative where you can enter a slogan to help promote renewability.  Tetrapak have pledged to donate £1 for every idea entered, and 10 pence for every vote to WWF’s forest saving work.

Paper is the Planet’s Gold

I entered my great idea yesterday, and please feel free to vote for it if you want.  Or make your own up, or vote for something else.

My slogan was: Paper is the Planet’s Gold and the explanation is that it would hopefully help people:

Compare the value of gold in global financial markets to trees for Planet Earth’s life. This will hopefully emphasise the value of paper and other products derived from living sources, and the need to use them sparingly and recycle as much as possible.

Win a Panda, Tiger or Dolphin

You can’t win a wolf unfortunately, but by voting you can win a WWF ‘Adopt Animal’ gift, such as adopting a panda, tiger or dolphin.

So, if you arrived too late to vote in the general election, or wished there was a greenygrey candidate, please vote now for Paper is the Planet’s Gold, or vote for something else and submit your own.

Cheers.

Brave New Traveler Article Updates

Sunday, May 2nd, 2010

I just updated some of my Brave New Traveler articles with comments containing relevant recent news stories:

Ant Theory of Humanity

Just came across Indra’s Net, which is a buddhist idea similar to the one in this article, and of course precedes it by quite some time!:

http://www.heartspace.org/misc/IndraNet.html

First alerted to it in an article on metaphor by Bridget Holding in Writing Magazine, April 2010.

 God and Natural Disasters

An Iranian cleric has recently blamed promiscuous women for earthquakes:

Earth Day 2010: Forty Years Anniversary / The Search for Life in the Universe

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

There is no doubt that our planet is a beautiful and amazing place, and it is still the only known world with life that we know of.  While I love the exploration of space, and the search for life in the universe, I am more passionate about saving the life we have here on Earth.

Earth Day 2010: Fortieth Anniversary

Today is the fortieth anniversary of Earth Day; a day to contemplate and help the planet we all share.  If you’d like to get involved you can see more information on the Earth Day website.  It is of course also supported by other campaign groups for wildlife and nature, such as WWF and Defenders of Wildlife.

The Search for Life in the Universe

I have a new article up on the Brave New Traveler website, with President Obama’s declaration for a new era in space travel the lead.  The article compares our place in the universe with the Europeans before Columbus started the mass migration to the Americas, and asks whether our theory of everything will be turned on its head in the next five hundred years as much as the  European view of our planet was half a millenium ago.  It’s available from the above link.  Happy reading and Earth Day!

Extraterrestrial Life in the Universe: Good and Bad News as Obama Announces Ambitious Space Programme

Friday, April 16th, 2010

There was some good news for hopes of finding extraterrestrial life in the universe when scientists announced rocky planets like Earth may be volumnous in our galaxy.  But hopes of finding life outside the galaxy took a knock when it was found that some exoplanets reverse orbit their stars, overturning theories that planets always orbited their suns in the same direction as the star moved.  Meanwhile, back on HQ, Planet Earth, President Obama was announcing an ambitious new space program for NASA to head further into space and onto Mars.

Have a univesally great weekend!!

Russia and US Sign New Nukes Deal: UK Should Scrap Trident?

Monday, March 29th, 2010

Russia and the US agreed a new nuclear treaty last week, whereby their nuclear arsenals would be cut by a third over ten years.  This can only be a good sign for the world.  Congratulations to the leaders who negotiated the deal.

Should Britain Scrap Plans for Trident?

With the US and Russian plans to cut their nuclear weapons, and in light of the difficult financial times we find ourselves in, should the UK scrap plans to bring in the new Trident system, or at least reduce the amount.

A nuclear deterrent seems less and less valuable in the current global conflict and financial situations, and the money would surely be better spent elsewhere?

Che Guevara: Myth and Reality

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

Thoughts on Che Guevara from an old revolutionary:

Che was a revolutionary with the right ideals: someone following their conscience to unnecessarily sacrifice themself to try and balance the great inequalities they saw in society.

In that way he can be compared to the biblical Jesus Christ, and if he’d died trying to depose Somosa that comparison would have been all the stronger.

But as he lived through his victorious revolution he had to try and adapt to new roles that he wasn’t suited for, and his weaknesses became apparent.

I think the real Che is somewhere between the very positive and very negative myths…

Nepal Lake and Cairns Poem and WWF Earth Hour

Friday, March 26th, 2010

I went to an interesting and inspirational conference in Leeds yesterday, and got lots of good advice and information about directing the Greenygrey the right way.  Not that you’d think it’d need it, after its epic rambles across North America.

New Nepal Himalayas Lakes and Cairns Poem

Claire Knight has created a great new Folding Mirror poem about Nepal’s beautiful lakes and the stone cairns left by travellers and trekkers in the Himalayas, and its on the fmpoetry website from the above link.

WWF Earth Hour

This Saturday the 27th, the WWF are asking everybody to cut their energy use from 8.30 to 9.30 pm for the WWF Earth Hour.

So, if it’s practical, please try and join in.  Although there’s been some controversy about global warming research lately, it’s really in everybody and everything’s interest to try and keep the planet clean and use as little energy as possible.  And you save money!

All For British Revolutions? British Revolutions on the Fours

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

At the height of the British political expenses scandal of last year, the nation’s revolutionary fervour inspired the BBC to move their Question Time political debate programme from its usual late night slot to peak time.  So, far from the BBC acting to hide the scandal, they worked to increase its exposure.  To me, this shows that they are not entirely state lackeys, as some people might think.

The British Velvet Revolution Now On BBC4

About a year later, the nation’s understandable wrath seems to have subsided, and democracy is stable again.  Did democracy work?  Has anything changed?  I don’t know, and only time will tell I guess.  Action has been taken, but whether it will bring real lasting change is unclear.

Last week, a doc-drama about how American journalist, Heather Brookes, tried to uncover the excess political expenses before the story was eventually leaked to the Telegraph newspaper (another sign of the media not being state lackeys), was shown on BBC4 (thanks to the Yorkshire Evening Post review for reminding me).

On Expenses suggested Brookes was a rebel who wanted a Watergate style story, while the establishment was defensive and secretive.  Commons speaker, Michael Martin, was shown to have rejected traditional protocol, but to have used expenses as much as possible with a kind of ‘workers’ rights’ rationale that was suggested to have been inspired by his working class roots.

It’s still available to watch until March 9th on BBC iplayer.

The Islamic Fundamentalist Revolution on Channel Four

If On Expenses reminded me of my rebellious youth opposing the system, the Dispatches documentary about those said to be working to create Britain’s Islamic Republic showed why my revolutionary zeal has subsided, and I’m thinking better the devil you know these days.

There’s a lot of debate about the programme on the above site, and how dangerous the Islamic Fundamentalists shown in the programme really are; but the sexism, homophobia, racism and fascism that these groups are known for was clearly apparent to all.

This was evident in the actual footage of fundamentalists’ speeches; conversations with Islamist activists boasting about how they were using the democratic system to promote and finance themselves and their religion/beliefs/structures; and the testimony of moderate muslims who know how they work and have bravely decided to oppose them.

It’s available to watch throughout March on the Channel Four website.

Also, congratulations to prominant Islamic theologian, Sheikh Tahir ul-Qadri, for issuing a fatwa against Islamic Fundamentalists carrying out terrorism, declaring those who do it will not go to paradise.  And the Pakistan army for having Al Quaeda on the run.

Guns N’ Roses Canadian Tour Brings Back Memories of GG’s Rambles

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

As you must all know by now, Saskatoon in Saskatchewan was a very special place for the Greenygrey on its epic rambles in 2008, as it met the sasquatches there, and had a wonderful time.  I think that salsaing with sassy Saskia Sasquatch was particularly memorable for the wacky werewolf.

Guns N’ Roses World Tour Rocked Saskatoon on Canadian Tour

After GG put Saskatoon on the world map, Guns N’ Roses decided to include it on their world tour; I don’t have any concrete evidence to prove that the GG’s visit was instrumental in the decision by Guns N’ Roses, but we are talking major coincidence if not…aren’t we?

The GG Rambles-Guns N’ Roses World Tour Conspiracy Deepens

And if the above wasn’t enough evidence to convince you of a connection, a Guns N’ Roses female interest in Saskatoon has now emerged.

On the GNR4Ever website it has been revealed that a massage therapist from Saskatoon by the name of Cornelia Tan has got the job for the Guns N’ Roses world tour, which after finishing off in Canada is heading to South America next.

I responded to the news on the website with this message:

Thanks Axletta. Funnily enough, Saskatoon is very special to my vegetarian werewolf friend, the Greenygrey, as well, as its main love interest on its epic rambles across North America was Saskia, a sassy sasquatch from Saskatoon, Sasketchewan.

As GG wrote on its return to the sasquatches:

Salsa with the Sasquatches of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan

Scooby took me over to Scobey for a fine home-cooked brekkie, and escorted me up to the Montana-Saskatchewan border.
I had another fine surprise there, because my old sasquatch friends were there to meet me. I wondered if I would ever see them again when I left them on my epic ramble of 2008, so it was mighty fine to re-aquaint.
After I introduced Scooby and the Sasquatches we said goodbye to Scooby and headed north.
We stopped off in Moose Jaw for some jaw-jaw on the way, and arrived in Saskatoon in the evening.
Needless to say we partied all night, and I had a great time salsaing with a sassy sasquatch called Saskia.
